Disturbing Touch-ups On Perfection
Written by Peter Youngren on June 13th 2006“For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” Revelation 22:18,19 The Apostle John, the Apostle Paul and Jesus Himself were extremely interested in one thing – protecting the integrity of the Gospel! It occurs to me that this is the only measuring stick that can be used to gauge the ‘health’ of a Church. Church history is littered with ‘man-made’ rules and regulations; additions and subtractions to God’s Word. For example, one Pope proposed that only the “Ministers” of the local church could administer communion. All historical indications are that everyone thought that that was a good and wise idea. Surely God would want there to be order in the administrating of Holy Communion was the logic. However, as good as it sounded, it was a man made rule. The Bible gives absolutely no such ‘command’. And as you slowly add all the good and wise ‘man-made’ rules implemented throughout the ages together, the original picture starts to become very blurred.
I compare it to a Master Painter who completes His portrait and leaves it hanging in His house for all to see. However, the Master Painter leaves His painting in the care of others. And slowly but surely the others see things in the painting, which they believe need ‘clarification’. Almost inevitably each caretaker, like their predecessor before, takes the liberty to ‘touch up’ small parts of the already perfect painting. Until after almost 2000 years of touch ups we have a painting which is not at all like the original.
However, the Lord has brought out His brush again and restored His original masterpiece to its previous glory. God does this by illuminating the minds of His body with revelation. And the revelation is not new; it’s His original Masterpiece. The Masterpiece is the message. And the message is Christ in You! God’s Grace is sufficient! And the sins of all mankind have been put away forever, not by works, but by The Work of the Lord Jesus.

Hi Pastor
Great illustration on the painting. I believe this is what the Lord says in Luke 11:42, they were more concerned about their tradition and rituals and have ignored Justice and Love. I just love the way our Lord dealt with this issue, all through the Gospel we see Jesus making a statement ’ is it OK to heal a person on a sabbath’, and he will go right ahead to heal that person, and all through out the ministry of Jesus, he will end up upsetting or breaking the agenda of the religious people. Although I am very thankful for the the orders and rules that is in effect in churches, but if that rules becomes our priority rather than what the Lord Holy Spirit requires and wants from the Church, in that case we have taken away from the words of truth. And the book of Revelation is a book that is written to the believers, who I believe has walked away from the mandate of our Lord. It is so obvious as we read that Jesus did not had any problem with the Demon’s or the Sinners, but his conflict was always with the Religious people, and it is heartbreaking that in the midst of all the good things our Master was performing that the only thing they could focus was that their program of service was been interfered. Today I encounter many people, inlcuding Christians that have failed miserably or even did not want a part in it, due the expectancy of Religious requirement. Closing with this statement I believe throughout the years we have majored on the very things that is least important in the Kingdom of God, and minored in the very things that the Lord Holy Spirit wants to do through the Churches.

Seems like Eve did the same thing, she told the serpent that God told them not to even touch the fruit lest they die, but God didn’t exactly say that, now isn’t that some form of ‘touching-up on perfection’? Where did she get this idea from, is it in our human nature or what?

Dear Pastor,
Yes I agree with what you said.Christ is our sufficiency. The problem with the modern church today unlike the Bereans in Acts is that we don’t take time to study the Bible for ourselves. We believe the preacher’s words more than God’s Word.

Many ‘caretakers’ attempt to improve the painting not knowing that the original is already perfect, because they do not personally know the Master Painter. Those who know Him, know that He only does things perfect, whole and complete. We can invite the Master Painter to reveal His original Masterpiece within us. He is actively involved in all His ‘works of art!’

When a person takes brush in hand to create a painting there is the true inclination to keep adding a touch here and changing an effect there. We can, without Jesus on the inside, keep touching up the painting that we make of our lives and even how we view God. Making Him in our own image, and to our liking. But never being satisfied.
With Jesus on the inside all we view is the perfection of Christ. Beautiful sky, sunset, sunrise, eyes in other people, families, friends, pets. You get the picture. Creation. God made it. It’s perfect. And yet we struggle even knowing that. We have a desire to take dominion over all things - it was given to Adam and Eve - and we want to continue to make our mark on our surroundings and others.
Lets begin to realise the Sabbath rest is to rest in Jesus, and what He has done. It’s done and perfect. And perfectly fine. Just coast a bit on it, and see how it changes your perspective.

HI Pastor Peter,
People in North America don’t mind Jesus but when it actually comes down to doing what Jesus said ‘Lose your life and gain Mine’; people lose interest in it because that would mean we would have to actually give up our life and let Him be in control.
I think that a lot of the North American gospel messages has been tought in churches to fit our comfortable lives and not to interfere with our comfortable lives. I agree that it should rather be thought to fit the origenal painting.

Dear Sir,
I am Fahim Qaiser from Pakistan . I have studied your web site, and I found it the most wonderful site to get right to the True Word of God. My suggestion for you is to create your material in my language of Urdu and Punjabi also. It will bring lots of blessings of the Word of God for the Pakistani and Indian Urdu and Punjabi speaking people. For that purpose I as a translator will bring your material into Urdu languages and into Punjabi language as well.
Although it will take your low expenses as well, as fund for the Word of God to reach out to the deserving people. I my self, work on a local radio station also. Many times it becomes difficult for us to keep doing this because of being minorities and because of the lack of the financial resources. I will wait for your response.
Sincerely,
Fahim Qaiser ( Pakistan ).

It seems throughout the church ages, what is considered ‘acceptable’ changes. It used to be that the minor chord and anything more than the organ in the church is considered, of the devil. But now, it has become acceptable.
But certainly, God standard of holiness does not change with time and culture. Indeed, the timeless message of the gospel is enough!
