Countdown to Pentecost #2 – The Mighty Baptism of the Spirit

The Mighty Baptism of the Spirit

The experience of the 120 believers on the day of Pentecost is commonly referred to as the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Later on this month we will celebrate Pentecost as an event on the Christian calendar. More than ever, believers today need the mighty baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus strictly warned his disciples to not carry on any ministry until the Holy Spirit had come upon them, [Luke 24:49 – 50]. The Pentecostal movement, which began in the early part of the 20th century, as well as the charismatic movement, which had its inception in the late 1960s put the baptism of the Holy Spirit in the forefront. Today, sadly many have allowed the reality of the baptism of the Holy Spirit to fade into the background.

The biblical language is very clear and consistent when it comes to differentiate between receiving the Holy Spirit at salvation and being baptized with the Holy Spirit. To baptize means to immerse, to be surrounded on all sides, like when a body is buried. While at salvation the Holy Spirit comes into us, at the baptism of the Holy Spirit we are immersed into the Spirit.

The Scripture records that the Holy Spirit fell on the believers. Other expressions are that the Holy Spirit was poured out on them, or that they were clothed or endued with power from on high. The illustrative language is clear. At salvation the Holy Spirit comes into us and our bodies become the temple of the Holy Spirit, while at the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit comes upon us; we are clothed with or immersed into the life of the spirit.
